Two storms blew through Fort Wayne on June 21. The first one was provided by Mother Nature in a rain storm in the early afternoon. The poor weather conditions vanished by five o'clock and the Indiana Cardinals finally took the field for the very first time to face the Southern Michigan Timberwolves. It was the Timberwolves who provided the second storm of the day as they rolled past the Cardinals by a 30-0 score.
The Cardinals looked like a team playing for the first time as the Timberwolves ran their offense to perfection in the first half, scoring 11 first quarter points and 19 in the second period while the Cardinals were unable to establish any offensive rhythm. The Timberwolves, a three-time league champion, have been in existence 15 years and their current quarterback, Kent Smith, spent last season in two NFL camps before being released.
The second half consisted of long drives that resulted in no points as the Timberwolves dominated the ball most of the third quarter and the Cardinals held the ball nearly the entire fourth quarter, getting as close as first and goal from the nine yard line. But, two incomplete pass ruined the effort. The Cardinal defense showed signs of long inactivity in the first half but made a decent showing in the second half by holding the Timberwolves scoreless.
The Cardinals showed a lot of growing pains in this first game considering so many players have not even practiced together yet this season. Still, the Cardinals have good personnel and will show some progress after this game and realizing that this league and the games will not be easy.
Cardinal quarterback Eric Adams showed plenty of leadership and heart by staying on the field despite a hard pass rush from the Timberwolves who hit, sacked and harassed Adams the entire game.
The Cardinals take the field, this Saturday June 28th at 5:00pm against the Randolph County Riot. This should be a great game as the Cardinals look to rebound from a big lost. So be in attendance and watch history happen.
